The BIG 📸:
Have you ever considered your existence, pursuits, and underlying motivations for whatever you might be chasing under the sun? What will it mean in the grand scheme of things to obtain it? Can you keep it once you have it? And if not, was it ever truly yours? What will it matter when you are gone?
Solomon answers these sorts of questions in his quest to unravel the mysteries of humanity. Solomon's qualifications make him the perfect candidate to conduct this search.
He was the wisest man ever to live
The most wealthy
Famous
And good-looking
In other words, Solomon had everything 99.9% men of this age pursue and more.
In the opening chapter, the teacher explores the concept that everything is meaningless and wisdom is futile.
The idea that "everything is meaningless" can be disheartening, but this notion only holds together if one excludes God from the equation. Solomon, the wisest man that ever lived, learns this truth and vividly expresses it in the remarkable and captivating book of Ecclesiastes.
The 🍞 of Life:
The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for wisdom. So God replied, “Because you have asked for wisdom in governing my people with justice and have not asked for a long life or wealth or the death of your enemies— I will give you what you asked for! I will give you a wise and understanding heart such as no one else has had or ever will have! And I will also give you what you did not ask for—riches and fame! No other king in all the world will be compared to you for the rest of your life! And if you follow me and obey my decrees and my commands as your father, David, did, I will give you a long life.” - 1 Kings 3:10-14
So Jesse sent for him. He was dark and handsome, with beautiful eyes. And the Lord said, “This is the one; anoint him.” - 1 Samuel 16:12
Late one afternoon, after his midday rest, David got out of bed and was walking on the roof of the palace. As he looked out over the city, he noticed a woman of unusual beauty taking a bath. - 2 Samuel 11:2
“Everything is meaningless,” says the Teacher, “completely meaningless!” - Ecclesiastes 1:2
What do people get for all their hard work under the sun? Generations come and generations go, but the earth never changes. - Ecclesiastes 1:3-4
History merely repeats itself. It has all been done before. Nothing under the sun is truly new. - Ecclesiastes 1:9
I devoted myself to search for understanding and to explore by wisdom everything being done under heaven. I soon discovered that God has dealt a tragic existence to the human race. - Ecclesiastes 1:13
The greater my wisdom, the greater my grief. To increase knowledge only increases sorrow. - Ecclesiastes 1:18
